Arvel Ras RaglandI am a Veteran.

of Marshall, AR

February 10, 1922 - April 20, 2016

Arvel Ras Ragland, age 94 of Marshall, Arkansas went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 20th, 2016 at his home. He was born in the Rock Springs community on February 10th, 1922 to James Harrison Ragland and Ollie (Jackson) Ragland.

Arvel worked all of his life, starting from a small child working in the fields, to logging with his dad, Harrison. After returning home from military service, he continued logging. Soon after this he began a career of carpentry. He spent many hours working with his son-in-law, Bentley and son, Jeff. After his retirement, he dedicated his life to taking care of his wife, Maxine and spending time with his grandkids. At the age of 20, Arvel entered the United States Army Ground Combat as an AAA gun crewman. He received 4 Bronze Stars from ground combat in Ardennes Forest and Rhine River in the Battle of the Bulge. He always said the coldest he ever was in his life was the first two weeks of this battle. Soldiers were not allowed to build any fires.
Arvel enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being outside. It was always a great joy for him to visit with family and friends that would stop by his office on the front porch to drink coffee and talk huntin`. He looked forward to riding with Jeff up in the field to check the cows every afternoon.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Maxine Snow Ragland of the home; three sons, Nelson
(Betty) Ragland of Harrison, Jeff (Sheila) Ragland of Marshall and Tim (Jackie) Ragland of Harrison; one daughter, Bethel (Bentley) Massey of Marshall; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two brothers, Jimmy D. Ragland and Floyd ''Tom'' Ragland; two sisters, Ruth Henry and Vigel Bowden; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who loved him and will miss him. We were so blessed to have this kind, gentle man to be our father, husband, grandfather and friend.

Arvel was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jack, Lloyd, Elmer and Doyle; sisters, Leatha and Opal; and one grandson, Ryan Brock Ragland.

Graveside services for Arvel will be 2:00 PM Saturday, April 23rd, 2016 at Red Hill Cemetery near Marshall with Bro. Cody Ragland officiating. Visitation will be 6:00 till 8:00 PM Friday, April 22nd, 2016 at Roller-Coffman Chapel in Marshall, Arkansas. Burial will be in Red Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Nathan Ragland, Heath Massey, Brandon Massey, Jake Ragland, Grant Ragland and Quinton Ragland. Honorary pallbearers will be Bentley Massey, Drew Collins, Dillon Collins, Evan Collins, Gary Don Snow and Tom Collins.
