Dudley H. Starn, age 99 of Leslie, Arkansas passed from this life on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at Highland Court Rehabilitation and Resident Care Facility in Marshall, Arkansas. He was born in Marvin, South Dakota on May 18, 1915 to Charles E. Starn and Modeana (Mezo) Starn.

Dudley was of the Baptist faith. He overcame polio at the age of 18 months. While in school in Arizona, he won the shot put. Dudley lived a vivacious and exciting life. He began his working years with a varied working history, from panning for gold to working on a dairy farm and hand milking many cows. He worked for many years as a sawmill hand in New Jersey where he had the privilege of assisting those who cut the center beam for the USS Bounty. Dudley's own initials are carved into the beam. He survived the depression years and went on to work as a welder for the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. His cowboy handle was ''Bashful'' and he became known as the last man to cross the United States in a covered wagon. ''Bashful'' and a friend begin their journey in Tucson, Arizona and traveled to the World's Fair in New York. The journey took approximately 7 months. Dudley ended his working career at Mortel's in New Jersey and then retired to Arkansas where he worked the farm and became an avid gardener. He even made a garden in his 98th year.

Dudley is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of over 50 years, Lillian Starn; one daughter, Georgetta Starn who died at the age of 3 from diphtheria; brothers, Leslie and Edward Starn; sisters, Pearl Audish, Ella McDaniel and Jackie Starn; half brother, Sam Cox; and half sister, Cora Mobbs.

Survivors include one daughter, Jacqueline Hoffman and husband Lawrence of Leslie; granddaughter, Ginger Kyle and husband Jackie of Leslie; one great granddaughter, Megan Miller; and several nieces and nephews who live in Arizona.

I met Mr. Starn and his lovely wife around 25 yrs ago. They were such nice people. He was so attentive to her. I always enjoyed visiting with them. He truly cared about others. I also remember their large parrot and how it would sit on Mr. Starn's shoulders and eat whatever they ate.
