Rudy Betzold, 94, of Mountain Home passed away on Sunday, April 15, after a short illness. He was born in Ilmenau, Germany on July 13, 1923, to Walter and Selma Betzold.
Rudy grew up in Chicago and was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, watching the 1938 World Series from a rooftop across the street from Wrigley Field as a youth.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and returned to Chicago to work in the television and newspaper industries for nearly 50 years.
Upon retirement to Mountain Home in 1993, he tended to his yard, including a large cactus garden, and was a decorated member of the North Arkansas Woodcarvers Club for his works of President Abraham Lincoln and other U.S. presidents.
Upon the occasion of his 93rd birthday, he was able to return to Wrigley Field to watch a game during the team's first World Series championship season in more than 100 years.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Marie; and is survived by sons Chuck, Bob and Jim (Rebecca); grandson, Eric (Regina); and great-grandsons, Charlie and Henry, all of Chicago.
A memorial luncheon will be held in Mountain Home for friends and family on a date to be determined.
